Ratbrain comtemplates his fantastic and malignant plot to dominate the world Victoria accuses Captain Halberd of all sorts of beastliness

Author! Author!  Boy, this one was a long time coming. The original version was written in 1995 but having a huge cast, lots of small scenes, an overloaded plot and a running time twice as long as Hamlet (but only half as funny), it was put in my bottom drawer. But there was some good stuff in it so, recovering from surgery in the summer of 2001, I extensively rewrote it, removing extraneous subplots and unnecessary scenes and getting the running time down to a manageable two hours. But it still had a huge cast. So back in the bottom drawer. But not for long. As Mad World had also had a huge cast, I hawked it around the group and Andy fancied having a crack so it was all systems go. I must admit that I wasn’t sold on the idea of casting women in the men’s parts but Emily’s spot-on portrayal of Chinchilla persuaded me otherwise. Hell, I’m only the author, what do I know? Edgar

Director's Commentary  I was very enthusiastic about doing Ratbrain, simply because it was one of the few plays that had made me laugh out loud whilst reading it. Thankfully, the audience felt the same! I don’t want to pick out individual members of the cast, but I think Jenny and Jane deserve special praise for stepping in for poorly cast members with very little notice. A great debut for Torg, though I can see him getting typecast Andy

Quote Unquote  Probably the only chance I'll get to be suave, sophisticated and to get the girl... but that's another story Ray
If being that evil can be that much fun I may take it up full time

Well hallelujah brother! - Some on stage action at last! I really enjoyed hitting Mandy and Ray over the head and doing the "spots". Well done to Edgar for producing a very witty script and to Andy for not cracking under pressure
Miranda
Not sure I have a very bright acting future as an absent-minded male professor, but wasn’t the wig lovely?
Jenny
I never knew how useful all those hours spent sitting at drear, tenebrous Bristol Temple Meads station, on the long and arduous journey on my way home to desolate and isolated Orchard Mount in dark and lurid Exeter would turn out to be (me luvver)
