Miss Julie hopes Jean hasn't seen "Un Chien Andalou"

Director's Commentary  Strindberg - another barrel of laughs production from the Chameleons! I originally had a comedy in mind this time round, but with our two previous productions both having large casts, an awful lot of Chameleons decided they would like a break this time round. Miss Julie had been knocking around the house for several years and a recent viewing of Alf Sjöberg’s fantastic 1951 film adaptation brought it to mind.
With at least three-quarters of the play being a two-hander between Jean and Miss Julie I knew I had to get the casting spot on. I knew Stan would be the prefect Jean after his confident debut in The Vigil but I didn’t have a Miss Julie. They were all taking a rest! However, I did have a cunning plan: I had met Clare the previous October when she was a dominatrix and I had tried to murder her! Needless to say this happened on stage when I had given Hull Playgoers a helping hand for their production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Communicating Doors. So I asked Clare if she’d like to return the favour, knowing that the Playgoers didn’t do a production in the summer. And to my delight, she accepted.
Now you might think that a play that ends with a suicide might cast a pall of despair over rehearsals but at no time was that the case. It really WAS a barrel of laughs and the cast worked tremendously hard to depict the changing balance of power between Miss Julie and Jean.  As for the performances, I know that I can often be quite frugal with my praise, but Stan and Clare were both absolutely fantastic. As was Miranda, who provided some much needed common sense during the Scandinavian gloom and doom. And lets not forget the farmhands who, despite only joining rehearsals with a few weeks to go, put everything into their one and a bit minutes on stage.
But my abiding memory of Miss Julie remains one of the Sunday rehearsals when, try to get Miss Julie to drag Jean offstage a little faster, I gave Clare the unfortunately worded direction, "You've got to pull him off much quicker". Stan thought I was the best director ever! David

Quote, Unquote  The more we rehearsed the play the more I realised what a desperately sad story it was, something I hadn’t really grasped when I first read it. A real roller coaster of emotions from the flirtatious beginning to the terrible conclusion.  From the first meeting, to the last performance, it was a real pleasure and taking into account it was a tragic play, that speaks volumes about everyone involved. Working so closely with people you naturally form a bond, but for me, this went beyond that. A group of people, who could, laugh at themselves one minute without fear of humiliation or feeling they were out of their comfort zone and be so professional the next. It's been an experience I shall never forget and the measure for me, of just how good it's been, is the sadness I experienced at the end. Who said you can't have too much of a good thing? Stan
This was my first production (and hopefully not the last) with Chameleon's and I really loved every minute.  I have been made to feel very welcome which made things much easier for me. Every member of the cast and crew of Miss Julie have been wonderful and made for an enjoyable and entertaining experience. We all worked so hard at every rehearsal and the final production was very successful! I enjoyed playing the part of Miss Julie, it was very much a challenge.  I would not say I found it easy to relate to her as she was such a complicated character, full of emotion, anger and hatred but in contrast there was a sensitivity about her.  It's not everyday I get to order someone to kiss my shoe! I also felt a real sense of loss the day after we finished the play which says an awful lot about the relationships and bonds that were formed in this team. So a great BIG thank you and well done to you all, I really have enjoyed this experience Clare
This was the most relaxed Chameleons production I have ever been involved with - a small cast and a long rehearsal period definitely helped and I would certainly recommend it for future productions! I quite liked my character, Kristin. Although not without her flaws, compared to the other two she was a model of decorum! Thoroughly enjoyed the rehearsals - we had a lot more laughs than you might expect given the subject matter - and the performances were a breeze. Even when things didn't quite go to plan - well, you try putting on a bow tie on someone without your glasses on - we managed to ad lib round it, something I've never been particularly good at in the past. It just goes to show what knowing the play inside out, and knowing you can rely on your fellow actors, can do for your confidence! Miranda
When David invited me to take the part of a "roistering peasant", I took the role very seriously.  I bought myself a crate of Guinness and began practicing, with great determination to get it right.  On a more serious note, I just want to say how much I have enjoyed working with the Chameleons again. I have been greatly impressed by the performances of the rest of the cast Mike
It was great to be part of Miss Julie and to see the phenomenal performances of Stan, Clare and Miranda. It was also nice to have been part of the comic relief. Honest, any excuse to sing a bit or do my drunk act is always welcomed. Great fun and very relaxed and enjoyable rehearsals Ray
A first class production with stunning performances from Clare, Stan and Miranda. Fantastic audiences for all three nights. Considering Strindberg is not exactly a barrel of laughs, we did have a lot of fun in rehearsals but in true Chameleon fashion, the end product was truly professional and a credit to all involved. Great stuff! Betty
